Why Do You Need A Security & Maintenance Provider?

The people at WordPress have made it clear that they will continue to focus on making WP better. That’s great news!
But it also means many more updates coming regularly (as well as potential bugs, conflicts and plugin hassles).
So you need to protect the investment you have made in your website.

lock imageMost hackers exploit websites by taking advantage of vulnerabilities in out-dated themes, plugins, or an outdated WordPress installation. By making sure everything is kept up to date and with a few extra security measures the risk of your website being compromised can be greatly reduced.

Is your website is running slow? A slow site can cause people to leave rather than stick around to view it. A slow site can even reduce your search engine rankings and lose you visitors. Outdated or unsupported plugins can also play a major role in limiting your website’s performance.

You have a business to run and a job to do. You may not need to add another time-consuming job as well. It can take up a huge amount of time and effort – trying to keep your website up to date and running smoothly. I can help you maintain your website and reduce the chances of your site being down or needing major repairs.

Trusted Maintenance & Security for Your Website

Like many others – you may feel that your website isn’t vulnerable to hackers. After all, it’s easy to just look the other way and believe that your site isn’t important enough for anyone to hack into.  You’re feeling is that there is nothing there that anyone would possibly want access to so why bother?

It is that kind of thinking that leads you to letting your guard down – and then the day comes when you find your site has been compromised and hacked. There is one constant that almost every website owner struggles with – how do I handle updates, security and how can I guard my site against attacks!

Types of Attacks

Targeted Attacks

  • Occurs .001% of the time
  • There is a specific “target”
  • How the attack will happen is unknown
  • The exploit is unknown, defined by what is found
  • There is enough motivation to return
  • Automated or Manual attack
  • High level of skill / expertise
  • Personal (i.e. political, competitor, hatred)
  • Modus operandi for organizations

Attacks of Opportunity

  • Occurs 99.99% of the time
  • Don’t have a specific “target”
  • The attack is known
  • The exploit is known, low-hanging fruit
  • The motivation to return is dependent on mass effect
  • Mostly automated
  • Low-mid level of skill / expertise
  • Not Personal (i.e. just in the wrong place at the wrong time)
  • Modus operandi for website attacks

Security & Maintenance Packages and Pricing

How often do you run updates
Standard theme, plugin, and WordPress core updates are run once per month. If there is an important update to prevent security issues, we will get to those right away. Often there is a week or two wait before manually implementing major WordPress or Theme updates so that all the bugs get ironed out first.  (These depend on whether your site is set up for ‘automatic’ updates or not.) Depending on the package you have chosen site backups are usually done either bi-weekly or weekly.
Do you offer 24/7 support?
No – 24/7 support is not offered. Support hours are 9AM – 5PM PDT, Monday through Friday with the exception of when away on holiday and Major Canadian Holidays.
Only 30 minutes of SEO and Speed Optimization?

You need to realize that is the normal ‘monthly’ figure here. Most clients cannot afford to invest thousands of dollars up-front for SEO and Speed Optimization services.
So it was decided to help with these areas by offering incremental services. Every month one important element is worked on at a time. So over time you site speed and SEO will improve without the need for an astronomical up-front investment.

Can I bank hours and roll them over?
Unfortunately no. Your development time cannot be banked or saved-up. They are used for development and maintenance each month.
What if a plugin is not supported now?
sUnsupported or orphaned plugins will still monitored for issues. If they don’t present any issues in the way things are working – or in the way your site is performing – they can stay on the site. However there are times when plugins are encountered that present performance or security issues. In these cases more up-to-date alternatives will be suggested.
What if an update breaks my site?

WordPress and plugins are frequently updated sometimes causing a conflict. Your site will be rolled-back to the last backup state where it was working. From there, you’ll be notified of any issues.

The majority of issues are addressed free of cost. However, custom plugins, issues introduced by users, or issues that may be especially time-consuming may be billable. If that is the case you will be notified up front before any work is done that would involve extra charges.

What if I haven't updated anything in months?
An audit of your site will be done and potential problems and conflicts will be looked for so they can be addressed at the beginning. In the case of a website that hasn’t been updated in months it may require some major fixes before upgrading to the latest version of WordPress and all the applicable plugins. You will provided with a report and an estimate for getting things fixed up first – before you commit to a maintenance plan.
What if it's already broken? Can you fix it?
Most of the time it can be fixed.  After taking a good look at your site to see what may be wrong you will be given an estimate for the work involved and how long it should take to fix.

If you have an emergency you can notify me of the problem by email and I will respond as soon as I am able.
If you do not have a current security and maintenance package your request will come into my queue and I will do a quick assessment and make recommendations for the next best steps on a per-half-hour basis. If you want express help you can pay a premium after-hours rate of $125/hour. What you cannot do is jump to the head of the line and put other projects behind. That is what the proactive security and maintenance packages are designed to prevent.
